Set your day up for success with a solid morning routine
How disappointed are you that I don’t drink lemon water as soon as I wake up? And I don’t even have any morning declarations! Ahhh. What kind of health and wellness blogger am I?!
Truth be told, there is no perfect morning routine. Not drinking lemon water as soon as you wake up is NOT going to wreck your digestive health or derail your weight loss goals. Could it help? I guess…!? And if repeating positive phrases that are written on your mirror helps you get your day off to the very best start, DO IT! But just because @________ (fill in a username of your favorite health instagrammer) does something every morning doesn’t mean you need to.
Should everyone have a bulletproof coffee in the morning? HECK NO. Are established morning routines important? HECK YES.
Please, make sure your morning routine is designed around YOUR needs, schedule, goals, and lifestyle. Don’t do what I do because… I do it. Do what’s best for you!
A couple months ago I tried establishing a morning habit of making my bed. I hate to be a buzz kill, once again, but it didn’t add anything sparkly to my morning vibes so… I stopped. Sometimes I make my bed, sometimes I don’t. Maybe one day I’ll give it another shot (probably when James and I move into our temporary single container home, at that point I don't think I'll really have a choice).
The point I’m trying to make is, all of these health and wellness tips floating around on the internet, as well-meaning as they are, aren’t for everyone.
We're inundated with "IF YOU WANT TO BE YOUR HEALTHIEST YOU MUST DO THIS..." So much so that we... don't do anything at all... Or we try to make so many changes at once that we don't stick with it for long.
Right now, my morning routine works really well for me, without making my bed every day or drinking lemon water as soon as I wake up. That doesn’t mean neither are beneficial or that one day I won’t add in a new habit to my morning but right now… I don’t need to, and that's okay.
Everyone has a morning routine. Not everyone has a good morning routine.
You'll know if yours is one worth sticking with if you're at peace in the morning, you feel good by the time you get to work, you're not stressed and it's not a rat race.
For a lot of you, the only thing that needs to change about your morning routine is the time that you go to bed each night so that you can wake up just a little bit earlier... That could be the key to unwinding the chaos that you've come to accept as your morning routine.
There's no way I would begin work in as great a head space as I do each day if I didn't leave my phone upstairs (our bedroom is downstairs) and prioritize getting to sleep no later than 9:30pm.
So, here's your call to action: Write down your morning routine... Make one improvement. Just one. (You're probably already thinking of it... It's that one thing that you know you should do). And when that one improvement becomes an effortless habit, make another improvement. Repeat this until you have a morning routine that sets your day up for success.
I'd love to hear from you! What do you do each morning that is essential for your day to get off to a good start?
